Feedback sought on design options for new bridge
Three design approaches for the new bridge have now been developed and public feedback is being requested.
The three options are pictured below and you can provide feedback here.
- The first of them (Option A) is a suspension bridge, with all its structure above deck.
- The second one (Option B) is a solid bridge with an arched soffit
- The third solution (Option C) also has an arched soffit but in this case with open spandrels
The deadline for feedback is 28 September.

Feedback from design concept consultation
In July/August we consulted on the options for the new Pooley Bridge. We wanted to find out what was most important to people about the old bridge and what they wanted from any new bridge design.
Your feedback has been collated and short summary of what was said can be found here (PDF).
This feedback has been used to inform three design options for the new bridge.

You can share your views about the project via the link below.
The deadline for responses is 9 August.
A further public meeting in Pooley Bridge will take place at the end of August, date to be confirmed, which will provide an update on the concept design project and seek further public input regarding the options identified.

Appointment of architects
Cumbria County Council is developing a new permanent bridge over the River Eamont in Pooley Bridge in order to replace the existing temporary structure installed after the original was washed away in December 2015. The construction of a new permanent crossing of the River Eamont will be an emotional relief and signal a new chapter for Pooley Bridge. The first stage of this work, which is currently underway to be finished by the end of September 2017, is the concept design of the new Pooley Bridge.
Knight Architects (Infrastructure Architect of the Year 2017), has been awarded the contract to deliver this work and will lead the consultative process, with technical support from engineering consultant Mott MacDonald. Knight Architects’ current work ranges from the new £600m Mersey Gateway to the Knostrop Footbridge, part of the Leeds flood alleviation works, and they recently prepared designs for the Lake District National Park Authority for a footbridge at Newby Bridge.
Knight Architects will lead a programme of public and stakeholder engagement so as to solicit useful input and give reassurances that broad interests are being considered. The first public meeting will be held on 26 August at Parkin Memorial Hall at 7pm.
