Essential road repairs to take place overnight on A591 Ambleside

Cumbria County Council will be carrying out road repairs on the A591 at Ambleside, from Waterhead traffic lights leading south to Stagshaw.

The county council is investing approximately £380,000 in these essential road maintenance works which will see a worn-out section of road replaced with a brand new surface.

Resurfacing works are scheduled to start on Monday 4 November and the scheme will involve carriageway reconstruction and associated works, and repainting road markings. The resurfacing is expected to last for two weeks, but could take a little longer if adverse weather leads to delays to the works programme.

Due to the narrow width of the road, it will be necessary to close this section of the A591 to enable our contractor Aggregate Industries Ltd to safely carry out these roadworks.

The county council recognises the A591 is an important strategic route and has arranged for the resurfacing works to take place at night-time, outside normal working hours, to minimise disruption to both businesses and the travelling public.

Therefore from Monday 4 November, this section of road will be closed for two weeks between 6.30pm and 1am on week nights (Monday to Friday only). This means vehicles will not be able to travel on the A591 between Ambleside and Windermere during the closure periods.

A signed diversion via the A592, A590, A5092 and A593 will be in place at these times. The road will re-open to two-way traffic at the end of each shift. No works are planned over the weekends when the road will remain open. A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained throughout. Access will also be maintained for emergency service vehicles.

Following a request from the community, the resurfacing works will be suspended for one night only and the road will remain open on the evening of Friday 15 November, in advance of the Ambleside Christmas lights switch-on event on the following day.

The A591 will also remain open on the evenings of Monday 4 November, to provide access to a large fireworks display in Ambleside, and on Friday 8 November, to provide access for a film festival in Ambleside.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “The condition of this road has deteriorated significantly and the county council will be putting in a new surface so road users can enjoy a safe and smooth journey. Unfortunately, this section of the A591 is quite narrow so we will need to temporarily close the road at night to enable our contractor to safely carry out this work.

“The county council recognises the A591 is one of Cumbria’s busiest roads so we have tried to minimise the impact of the road closure by arranging for these works to take place during off-peak night-time hours. However, we appreciate there will still be some disruption. We apologise for any inconvenience and would ask people to plan ahead for their journeys during this period.”
