Katherine Fairclough appointed as Chief Executive of Liverpool City Region Combined Authority

Katherine Fairclough, Chief Executive, has been appointed as the Chief Executive of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Her appointment follows four successful years as Chief Executive at Cumbria County Council. Appointed in March 2017, Katherine will leave the council in early summer and work will now begin to ensure there is a smooth transition to a replace her.

Commenting on Katherine’s appointment Cumbria County Council’s Leader, Cllr Stewart Young said:

“Katherine has been an outstanding Chief Executive and it has been a real pleasure to work alongside her. Liverpool City Region is gaining an outstanding individual in every field.  She has shown Cumbria what great public sector leadership looks like. Her personal style, strong values and commitment to working in a collaborative way has really helped steer Cumbria through some difficult times, not least over the last 12 months during the COVID pandemic.”

Katherine Fairclough, Chief Executive, added:

“My decision to take up this new role has not been taken lightly. I am exceptionally proud of what has been achieved during my time in Cumbria. In particular I feel there are now really strong relationships and a great commitment to joint working across all partners. I see a real sense of collaborative working, based around a shared common goal of putting the people of Cumbria first.  I’m delighted to be taking up this post as Chief Executive of the Combined Authority and looking forward to working closely with all its partners to build on the great work to date.”

Cllr Peter Thornton, Deputy Leader and Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, added:

“Katherine has been an excellent Chief Executive for Cumbria and it is testament to her leadership style that Cumbria County Council finds itself in such a strong position. Thanks to her strong and effective leadership she leaves behind a team who I am confident will now take forward our ambitions in her absence. The real test of leadership is how an organisation deals with a crisis. During the last year the County Council has provided support for those in need and the success of Cumbria’s response is down to the fact that Katherine has established such strong and effective partnership relationships. I wish her every success for the future and I know that she will be equally as successful in her new post.”

Cllr Hillary Carrick, Leader of the Conservative Group, commented:

“Working with Katherine has always been a pleasure, but having had the opportunity to see her skills in practice at close quarter during the last few months convinces me that she will be perfect for this challenging new venture.  I wish her every success in the future.”
