Cumbria County Council is encouraging residents to get involved and celebrate VE Day at home on Friday 8 May 2020

The county council has created a special VE Day at home pack to help residents of all ages celebrate and mark the 75th anniversary in the safety of their own home, due to the current COVID-19 social distancing measures.

The online pack contains everything needed to celebrate in style, it has themed recipe ideas, a VE Day wordsearch, craft ideas on how to make bunting and paperchains, 1940s-inspired games and songs to sing to keep the family entertained.

Friday 8 May 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (commonly known as VE Day). In May 1945 Germany surrendered to the Allies and, after six long years of fighting, the war in Europe came to an end. Millions of people up and down the country greeted the news with bunting, parades and parties, and there was singing and dancing in the streets.

Councillor Celia Tibble, Cabinet Member for Environment with responsibilities for Armed Forces Champions said:

“The 75th anniversary is a significant date which I hope residents will take the time to reflect and to thank and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who fought so hard to make that moment in 1945 possible. Without them, many of us what not be here today.”

“I would like to encourage everyone to celebrate VE Day in the safety of their own home”.

Chair of Cumbria County Council, Councillor Christine Bowditch said:

“To help residents of Cumbria celebrate, we have created this pack which I hope they will find useful and have a wonderful time at home celebrating this historic moment, whether this is by enjoying the day with their household or using all the technology available to celebrate with their loved ones and friends online. It is a huge shame that all events around the country have sadly had to be cancelled due to the pandemic but I’m sure all our residents will pull out the stops to make sure this is a day to remember.”
