Council supports National Carers Week 10 - 16 June 2019

Cumbria County Council is pleased to be supporting National Carers’ Week between 10 and 16 June, with a variety of events taking place across the county.

It is estimated that 10 % of the national population are carers - equivalent to nearly 7 million people in the UK.  The work they carry out is vital for their families and friends, as well as for their local communities.

The annual National Carers Week offers an opportunity to highlight and recognise the achievements of carers and the huge contribution they make. Local events are planned around the county with support from Cumbria County Council and Carers’ Organisations.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, substance misuse issue, or who needs extra help as they get older.

Whilst the caring role can be rewarding for those people who provide that support, Cumbria County Council also recognises that it can be challenging and it is vital that carers have access to the support they need.

Cllr Patricia Bell, Cabinet Member for Health and Care Services said:

“The support people provide in their caring role is a vital and highly valued one. National Carers Week is a great opportunity to shine a light on the tremendous things they do and highlight the contribution they make.”

Cumbria County Council helps fund carer support services across the county and is pleased to support and raise awareness of many local events arranged by local carer organisations.
