Public invited to have their say on Carlisle Southern Link Road plans
Local residents, businesses and organisations are being asked to have their say on the development of the new Carlisle Southern Link Road which will support St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.
Following a competitive process against a number of other councils bidding for funding, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government confirmed that they would grant £102m from the Housing Infrastructure Fund for the £112m scheme.
This next phase of consultation will inform the public of the changes made since the last consultation in early 2018 when the preferred ‘green route’ was chosen. It will also provide the opportunity for the public and stakeholders to view the latest scheme design and make suggestions for improvements in advance of submitting the Planning Application in autumn 2019.
Public consultation events will be held on:
- Monday 3 June, 12pm - 8pm: Carlisle Racecourse, Durdar Road, Carlisle.
- Tuesday 4 June, 10am - 8pm: Carlisle Racecourse, Durdar Road, Carlisle.
- Friday 21 June, 10am - 5pm: Inside The Lanes Shopping Centre.
- Saturday 22 June, 10am - 4pm: Inside The Lanes Shopping Centre.
The consultation will be open for six weeks from 31 May to 12 July.
The link road aims to reduce congestion within and around the city, improve travel within Carlisle, and enhance links to west Cumbria. The new road will also support the creation of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village being developed by Carlisle City Council.
St Cuthbert’s Garden Village will deliver approximately 10,000 new homes and employment opportunities, bringing significant benefits to the city and the wider county.

“The Carlisle Southern Link Road and St Cuthbert’s Garden Village are both ambitious projects and I’m delighted that we convinced government of their merits and they have backed the schemes. The garden village and link road have the real potential to transform the city, and provide a major boost to the whole county.
“We’ve listened to the feedback from the public consultation last year which helped select the preferred route and shape the design of the scheme.
“I’d strongly encourage people to take the time to get involved, read the consultation materials and attend one of the events - it’s important that local people have their say so that together we can make the scheme the best it can be.”
