In Carlisle there are a number of projects ongoing concurrently managed by different providers, including United Utilities, the city council and the county council.
Here is an update on the various works:
Victoria Viaduct
Victoria Viaduct remains closed due to the potential for collapse of the Central Plaza Hotel building. The closures have been put in place by Cumbria County Council's highways team following advice received from Carlisle City Council's Building Control team and their consulting structural engineer and principal designer. We expect the current closure and diversions to remain for at least two months.
Warwick Road
United Utilities are continuing with their works on Warwick Road to replace and improve water pipes under the road surface. Temporary two-way traffic lights will remain in place between Botcherby Bridge and Greystone Road for another few weeks, but will be removed in the run up to Christmas. For safety reasons, there is no vehicle access from Greystone Road onto Warwick Road.
The Crescent, English Street and Botchergate
These resurfacing and carriageway improvement works are due to commence on the evening of Sunday 27 October with an approx. duration of 10 nights. Works will be undertaken between the hours of 8pm - 5am on Sundays to Thursdays (no works on Friday or Saturday nights).
Phase 1 - The Crescent, from the junction with Warwick Road to the junction with English Street commences on Sunday 27 October for 10 nights.
Phase 2 - English Street and Botchergate, taking place Monday 28, Wednesday 30, Thursday 31 October and Sunday 3 November for one night on each date (8pm - 5am).
We have carefully considered the impact and the consequences of carrying out these works.
The combined impact of scheduled overnight closures with the Victoria Viaduct and Warwick Road works is considered less disruptive than facilitating overnight closures later when Victoria Viaduct has reopened. The public are already making alternative arrangements to avoid the area, where possible, and allowing extra time for their journeys. By doing this evening work at the same time we won’t need to impact on people’s journeys again once Victoria Viaduct has reopened.
Continuing with the works as planned also helps to avoid the potential of unplanned closures or restrictions due to the ongoing deterioration of the carriageway this winter. If we delay the works we may see some unplanned restrictions on the Crescent which can be avoided by doing them as scheduled.
Rome Street
Repairs to the carriageway are scheduled to be carried out on Rome Street in two sections. The first section of the works is located between the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Boustead’s Grassing and Soccerworld and will be carried out under two way traffic lights. The recycling centre will be closed during the works, on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November during usual operating hours.
The second section of works is located at the junction with Currock Road and will be carried out under four way traffic lights. Both sections will be carried out concurrently and when practical, we will be working 24 hour shifts - day working times 8am to 6pm, evening working times 7pm to 6am.
