Carlisle’s Household Waste Recycling Centre introduces booking system

Following the re-opening of the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Rome Street in Carlisle last month, a decision has been taken to introduce a booking system from Tuesday 7 July to help prevent the dangerous build-up of traffic in the area.

The same system has been in successful operation at the Grange-over-Sands site for the past few weeks due to the volume of people trying to access the site.

Anyone wishing to visit the Rome Street HWRC will need to visit cumbria.gov.uk/wastebookings or call 0300 003 1118 to pre-book one of a number of half hourly slots. The site is open between 8am and 6pm, seven days a week, meaning there are plenty of times and days available to choose from. Advance bookings can be made online or via the telephone number from today onwards.

To ensure the safety of both staff and members of the public only those with an appointment will be able to use this particular site for the time being. The booking system will be reviewed and removed once the site is able to function without being overwhelmed by the number of visitors whilst still maintaining safe social distancing. To speed up access to the site, visitors are asked to display the booking reference on a piece of A4 paper in their windscreen.

Cllr Celia Tibble, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said:

“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience who has visited one of our sites to dispose of their additional waste since they re-opened last month. On the whole all our sites have coped well with the demand with the exception of Grange-over-Sands and Carlisle whose access roads are unable to cope with the volume of traffic.

“Keeping staff and the public safe is our absolute priority and the new booking system will ensure this is maintained and also make the roads around the HWRC less congested and help to minimise the disruption for our local residents. It’s quick and easy to book a slot using the online system and visitors will be able to choose from one of 20 slots every half an hour between 8am and 6pm.”

Restrictions apply and people should read the guidance at https://www.cumbria.gov.uk/planning-environment/waste-management/default.asp before visiting.
