Members of Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Eden met on Monday 28 September for their monthly virtual public meeting.
The Area Manager’s report to the committee highlighted the recent activities of Eden Local Committee`s Children and Young People`s Working Group and made recommendations for both the Strategic Budget and the 0-19 fund.
Members approved a recommendation for an emotional wellbeing pilot project for young people in Eden, ‘Coaches in Mind’ and allocated £10,000 from the strategic budget to support the cost of developing this pilot project in Eden.
The project, which will be launched in the autumn, will provide confidential 1-2-1 coaching through online therapeutic programmes, as well as face to face engagement with a trained mentor. Up to 150 places on the Coaches in Mind programme will be made available for young people in Eden, aged 14 - 19 years.
The programme will be delivered by Carlisle and Eden Mind, and access will be facilitated by secondary schools across Eden. Coaches in Mind will offer each young person a six-week guided programme with a trusted mentor, plus continued access to the emotional resilience online tools for a further 12 months.
The committee also funded a 0-19 grant for The Oaklea Trust’s ‘Right2Work’ scheme in Eden for £4,618.60.
This pilot scheme, which will also launch in the autumn, aims to assist young people aged 11-18 years with additional needs into education and employment. Through 1-2-1 support and group work, young people will be supported with returning to school settings, pathways into further education, internships and employment.
The scheme aims to increase employability opportunities for young people with additional needs and support activities that improve mental health and emotional well-being.
Cllr Phil Dew, Chair of Eden Local Committee, said:
“One of our key priorities for Children and Young People in Eden is to support activities that help to improve mental health in young people in Eden. The Coaches in Mind project aims to do just that and we are pleased to be piloting this new initiative in Eden.”
“It is also really pleasing to see our 0-19 grants, which are available for not for profit groups working with children and young people in the local community, contributing to such a worthwhile project and supporting young people who face additional challenges accessing further education and employment.”
