Barrow community are invited to celebrate Cumbria County Council’s £1m investment in historic town building

Everyone in the Barrow community is invited to a free family fun day to celebrate Cumbria County Council’s £1m investment into one of the town’s landmark buildings.

The event is to be held in the Barrow Library building in Ramsden Square on Saturday 11 September 2021 between 11am and 2pm. It will mark the official opening of Barrow’s flagship Customer Connect building following completion of the £1m redesign. Everyone is invited to come along; there will be activities and refreshments available for the whole family.

Activities on the day will include a fancy-dress competition, face painting and storytelling for little ones and for teens there’ll be a giant buzz wire, magic selfie mirror and much more! Other activities include a tombola, archive tours, exhibitions and a photography competition. Plus live music from brilliant local band ‘Whiskey Getaways’. No need to book, just turn up and enjoy the fun!

Cumbria County Council’s Chairman, Cllr Tony Markley and Chair of Barrow Local Committee, Cllr Kevin Hamilton will be opening the building with an official ribbon cutting as part of the event.

Keep a look out on Barrow Library and Archives and Community Learning and Skills Facebook pages for more details about the fancy-dress and photography competitions for an opportunity to win some fantastic prizes.

The newly redesigned building will deliver library services alongside Local Studies, Archives and Adult Learning, and includes a new café area, teen zone, sensory room, bookable meeting space and much more.

Cllr Kevin Hamilton, Chair of Barrow Local Committee, said;

“The redesign of the Barrow Library building is now complete, making it one of Cumbria County Council’s flagship customer connect buildings. It is now home to a wide range of services including Libraries, Local Studies, Archives, Adult Learning, a café area and a new teen zone.

“The Barrow Library building redesign project has delivered a wonderful community asset for everyone, including families with children that have disabilities, autism or other additional needs. I’m very much looking forward to being part of this fantastic celebration event to showcase the incredible changes to the local community.”

Cllr Tony Markley, Cumbria County Council’s Chairman, said;

“There are a range of new, practical and creative features within the redesigned library building, including a café area and sensory room (providing a safe space for families with young children that have additional needs). The new children’s library includes stunning bespoke ship book shelving providing space for creativity, storytelling, and play.

“Barrow Library Celebration Day will provide a fun-filled day for the whole family and give us the perfect opportunity to show the residents of Barrow what the redesigned library building offers.”
