Cabinet approval for Port Masterplan will help boost West Cumbria economy
Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet have today (Thursday 23 September) unanimously agreed to endorse the new masterplan for the Port of Workington.
The purpose of the masterplan is to identify opportunities to support the continued sustainable development of the Port through new business opportunities and improved infrastructure, which in turn will support the economic growth and potential of the wider region.
The masterplan provides a clear vision for the long-term future of the Port, focusing on how the Port can expand its core freight transport customer base, as well as develop the skills and facilities needed to support green industries - diversifying the economic and environmental potential of the Port.
The masterplan could bring wide-reaching benefits for the local and regional economy. It sets a framework for the port to support increased imports and exports linked to manufacturing, and increasing the use of the Port as a logistics gateway for the wider region will all benefit the local area.
The endorsement of the county council’s Cabinet means work can now begin to put the masterplan into action, working alongside partners to ensure the plan meets its primary objectives - to attract new business to the Port, support the sustainable growth of the Port, and to unlock further economic and environmental investment that will benefit the local area.
