Cumbria County Council award £10k to help young children in Eden have active start in life

At a recent Cumbria County Council Eden Local Committee meeting, members agreed to award £10,000 to the Active Start for Early Years programme, to deliver training and resources to early years practitioners across Eden.

Members of Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Eden met on 27 July for their public meeting. Councillors considered and approved a recommendation from Eden Local Committee’s Children and Young People’s Working Group to award £10,000 from the 2022-2023 Strategic Budget, to fund an initiative which aims to help young children in Eden have an ‘Active Start’ in life.

The Active Start for Early Years programme, which has been developed by Active Cumbria and successfully piloted in the West of the County, will offer free training and resources for early years practitioners across the district. The pilot which is scheduled to launch in Eden in the autumn, will offer a package of support for practitioners to help settings focus on supporting a child’s physical development. The outcome of the project will aim to increase physical literacy and participation in physical activity amongst early years children (aged 2-5), positively impacting on their school readiness.

Cllr Phil Dew, Chair of Eden Local Committee said:

“One of our key priorities for Children and Young People in Eden is to work with partners to develop programmes that support an active life and create opportunities for children to engage in physical activity. The Active Start for Early Years programme aims to do just that and we are really pleased to be piloting this initiative in Eden.”
