Cumbria County Council welcomes DfT funding to develop business case for Kendal Northern Access Route

Cumbria County Council has secured government funding to further develop proposals for the Kendal Northern Access Route.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has approved the Strategic Outline Business Case for the Kendal Northern Access Route and supported the County Council’s funding application for the next stage of business case development - the Outline Business Case.

The Council will now start work on developing the business case for the route, a new road connecting the A591 Windermere Road and the A6 Shap Road, to the north of Kendal.

This will include looking at route options, environmental assessment, public consultation and identification of a preferred route to include in the Outline Business Case.

Cumbria County Council worked with South Lakeland District Council and Kendal Town Council to develop the Strategic Outline Business Case that was successfully submitted to DfT for approval to provide funding for the next stage of development work.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “We welcome the announcement that the DfT will be funding work to deliver the Outline Business Case for the Kendal Northern Access Route, with a contribution from Cumbria County Council.

“The proposed new road would support the delivery of future strategic growth in Kendal and improve access to existing employment areas as well as reduce congestion and increase network resilience within the town centre. It would also ensure that, when the M6 is closed between junctions 36 and 39, diverted traffic has an alternative route and won’t need to travel through Kendal town centre.”

Cllr Peter Thornton, Deputy Leader of Cumbria County Council, added: “I am delighted we have secured DfT funding to develop further study work for the Kendal Northern Access Route, which is essential to the people of Kendal and the local economy. It’s very welcome news that we can now progress this scheme to the next stage, the Outline Business Case, as there is a clear need for the new route to the north of the town.”
