Councillor Tony Markley has presented a fantastic total of £2526 to North-West Ambulance Service Charity (NWAS Charity) and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The money was raised during his year as Chairman of Cumbria County Council from 2021-2022.
The former Chairman presented cheques to his chosen charities today (Thursday 9 June) in his hometown of Silloth.
Each year the incoming Chairman of Cumbria County Council nominates one or more charities for which they promote and fundraise for during their term of office. Councillor Markley chose to support NWAS Charity, specifically their Community First Responders, and the RNLI because of the fantastic work they do in Cumbria to help keep residents and visitors safe.
The money raised by the former Chairman will be distributed to the Cumbrian branches of each charity.
NWAS Community First Responders are volunteers who are trained to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work.
The RNLI is a charity that saves lives at sea. Powered primarily by donations, their search and rescue service has been saving lives for nearly 200 years.
The money was raised throughout Councillor Markley’s civic year thanks to a number of fundraising events including an online charity auction, Christmas Jumper Day, staff fundraising activities organised by council apprentices and other generous donations.
Councillor Tony Markley said:
“I am delighted to present my chosen charities with the funds raised during my time as Chairman. It was a privilege to be in a position to raise money for two incredible charities which play a crucial role here in Cumbria to help keep residents and visitors safe.”
“I am extremely grateful to all those who showed support, fundraised, donated and raised awareness of these charities during my year as Chairman. A special mention goes to all the local businesses which very kindly donated items to my charity auction.
“I am blown away by your generosity and know how appreciated and beneficial this money will be to both charities, particularly after a difficult few years.”
