January road improvements - A592 - update

Cumbria County Council is updating residents and businesses about the resurfacing works on the A592, which is part of the Department for Transport's (DfT's) 'Safer Roads Project'.

As a result of the recent weather and ground temperatures, the last part of the road surfacing from Brackenrigg to Waterfoot Junction was not completed before Christmas.  Our contractor, Hanson will now be returning to complete this phase of resurfacing on Tuesday 10 January.  It is currently planned to carryout resurfacing on Tuesday and Wednesday, then carryout final verge reinstatement and white-lining on Thursday 12 January, weather permitting.  This will complete Phase 4 of the project.

During this period the road will be closed with work taking place between 8.30am and 4.30pm. Outside of these working hours, access will be maintained where possible, but vehicles do so at their own risk.

Hanson will then move onto the final section, Phase 5, Waterfoot Junction to Rheged.  Work will begin on Wednesday 18 January until Tuesday 7 February, weather permitting.  During this period the road will be closed with work taking place between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday.  Outside of the working hours, as stated above, access will be maintained where possible, but vehicles do so at their own risk.

Cumbria County Council would like to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the highway network. Please accept the county council’s apologies for any inconvenience caused by these improvements.

For more information and to see the next phases, please visit the Safer Roads website.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:

“We want to thank the public and businesses for their patience and support, while we make these necessary repairs to the A592.

“We do apologise that we cannot carry out these works using temporary traffic lights, but due to health and safety implications, we must protect both members of the public and our workforce, and safety is our priority.

“The full schedule can be found on Safer Roads' website, which is updated regularly, and includes a frequently asked question section too.”

Please refer to the Safer Roads website for more details. If more information is needed, please email  A592@cumbria.gov.uk.
