Kirkstone Pass safety survey to take place

Cumbria County Council plans to improve the safety of the A592 Kirkstone Pass and will begin surveys this week.

The county council has appointed Metcalfe Plant Hire to survey the A592 at Kirkstone, which will start on Wednesday 25May and last for three days.

Work will be conducted between Brotherswater on the northern end and Hird Wood on the southern end, a distance of 4.3 miles.  The survey work will take place at specific points along the road.

Survey work is expected to take place between 8:00am and 5:00pm daily, and traffic management will be implemented at survey locations using Stop/Go boards to manage traffic.

A small diameter road core will be drilled into the road surface as part of the work, which will determine what the road pavement is made of.  As a result, maintenance and other future road safety-related works can be designed more efficiently.

This survey works will be conducted this week rather than during the half-term holidays. A second survey is scheduled for June.

The county council apologises in advance for any disruption this work may cause, and they have said there may be slight delays, but they will do everything possible to minimise disruptions.  The council would also like to thank local residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while improvements to road safety are made.

Any questions or queries can be emailed to A592@cumbria.gov.uk .
