Major changes to food labelling from 1st October

This month Cumbria Trading Standards are streaming a free online webinar to help local food businesses get ready for big changes in allergen labelling laws which come into force next month.

On 1st October food businesses selling foods which are ‘prepacked for direct sale’ will need to put a full list of ingredients on the product which includes any of the 14 allergens listed in law.

This change follows the tragic death of 15 year old Natasha Ednan-Laperouse after she had an allergic reaction to a Pret A Manger baguette.  Natasha was severely allergic to sesame and the baguette label did not state that it contained sesame due to an exemption on allergen labelling in the law.  This cost Natasha her life.  Her parents have campaigned to change the law to ensure other consumers living with allergens or intolerances can have confidence that the food they buy and eat is safe.  In 2019 the government created “Natasha’s law” which comes into force this October.

Cumbria Trading Standards in partnership with Better Business for All Cumbria, Trading Standards North West and the Office of Product Safety and Standards have developed a free 1 hour live webinar along with an online toolkit to help businesses prepare for the changes.  The webinar will also cover a basic introduction to prepacked and loose food labelling and provide a Q&A session with Trading Standards Officers.

‘Prepacked for direct foods’ are foods which are made by the same business who sells them, from the same premises and have been placed into packaging before the customer orders it.  For example, sandwiches, salad boxes, grab and go foods in a deli which have been made by the deli and placed into packaging before being placed onto the shelf for the consumer to grab, pay and go.

The live webinars will be streamed on:

  • 22 September 2021 at 6.30pm
  • 23 September 2021 at 2pm

Any businesses who would like to attend the webinar should register their interest here.

An email link to register can also be requested by contacting Cumbria Trading Standards on trading.standards@cumbria.gov.uk
