Night-time road maintenance planned in Ambleside and Windermere - ahead of the tourist season

Cumbria County Council is planning to conduct essential road maintenance work on the A591 in Ambleside and Windermere in the coming weeks.

To ensure a safe and effective travel experience for visitors and local residents, these works are being carried out ahead of the peak tourist season.

Commencing Monday 9 May, the repairs will be made every night from 6.30pm to 1.00am on Rydal Road, Ambleside, between Smithy Brow and Greenbank Road for the entire week. While the road will remain open and passable, temporary traffic lights, along with a convoy vehicle, will be in use, along with the general rule that only private motor vehicles will be permitted access. At this stage, weekends will not be scheduled unless work time is lost due to adverse weather conditions.

As of Monday 16 May, works between Old Hall Road and Sun Hill Lane, Troutbeck Bridge, will be carried out during the evening and vehicles will be controlled by two-way temporary traffic signals, with completion anticipated by 26 May.

During this period of essential work, the county council would like to extend its thanks to the residents, businesses and visitors for their patience and co-operation.
