Repairs to the slope near Ashness Bridge Pier

Cumbria County Council will be carrying out interim slope repairs on the B5289 near to Ashness Bridge Pier, Keswick, starting in July.

The repair work will stabilise the slope supporting the road which has been damaged by recent winter storms.

The county council has appointed Metcalfes Plant Hire to complete the project, which is being funded by the Infrastructure Recovery Programme.

In order to maintain road stability and pedestrian safety, voids at the bottom of the slope need to be filled, using stone from the shoreline as well as bringing in stone of all sizes, which will slow down deterioration of the slope.

For one day on Monday 4 July, there will be two-way traffic signals so that repair material can be delivered and unloaded onto the shoreline.

There is unlikely to be any further need for traffic management until the night of Wednesday 13 July, when the road will be closed overnight so the contractor can deliverl rock armour to protect the repairs.  Metcalfes are expected to stay on site for approximately two weeks.

Due to the scale of the project, some delays are possible, but teams will make every effort to minimise disruptions.  Footpaths will remain open during these works.

The county council apologises in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause, and thanks local residents, businesses, and visitors for their patience and support as improvements to road safety are made.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet member for Highways, said:

“This essential programme of works will help to improve the slopes on the B5289 near to Ashness Bridge Pier, Keswick, which have been damaged by winter storms.

“This work will help to stop the deterioration of the slopes and will be coordinated to minimise disruption and delays.

“I’d like to thank the local communities for their patience and understanding while we make these essential improvements”.
