Temporary weight limit for bridge near Tebay

A temporary weight restriction is being introduced on a bridge near Tebay for safety reasons following a structural assessment.

Vehicles heavier than 26 tonnes will be prohibited from travelling along Roger Howe Bridge on the A685 after an assessment confirmed the bridge has a reduced capacity.

The 80-metres long bridge is located to the east of the M6 motorway and carries traffic on the A685 over the River Lune south of Tebay.

Cumbria County Council are implementing a temporary 26-tonne weight restriction to ensure that the bridge joints are not overstressed and that the structure remains safe to use by vehicles up to 26 tonnes.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “We’re introducing a temporary weight restriction on Roger Howe bridge as a safety precaution. Once our engineers have carried out further investigation work, we will understand the nature of strengthening works required and how long the restriction will need to stay in place. We apologise for any inconvenience but the safety of the public is of paramount importance.”

A signed diversion route will be in place as a suitable alternative for vehicles heavier than 26 tonnes.
