Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service can confirm the large refuse fire involving approximately 250 tonnes of shredded waste at Thackwood Recycling Centre, near Southwaite is now fully extinguished.
Advice was previously issued to local residents to keep their doors and windows closed if they were affected by the smoke whilst fire crews worked to extinguish the fire. Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service can now confirm the sheltering message has been lifted and windows and doors can now be reopened again for ventilation and there should be minimal effects of smoke in the surrounding areas.
We would like to thank the public for their patience and support whilst we worked to bring this incident safely to a close.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
