Works to start on Gooseholme footbridge replacement project in Kendal

Cumbria County Council is delivering the long-awaited project to build a replacement footbridge across the River Kent at Gooseholme in Kendal.

Preliminary works started on site in August 2021 and it is anticipated the construction of the bridge will be completed in Spring 2022.

The first stage of the works are linked to utility diversions in Gooseholme and New Road.  Several utilities (Electricity North West, Sky, United Utilities, Virgin Media, Vodaphone) need to be diverted to allow the works to proceed.

Due to the nature of the Virgin and Vodaphone works, it is essential that there is a statutory eight week ‘stand-down’ period, to allow for customer notification, which is Ofcom regulated.   During this period there will be limited works taking place.

As the bridge is being upgraded to become DDA compliant and cycling friendly, the ramps will be slightly larger to facilitate its future usage.

The replacement bridge will reconnect two pieces of common land which were previously linked for 140 years. This replacement footbridge will ensure that this link remains fit for purpose for the future.

It is with thanks to our funding partners who have made this £2m project possible; the Environment Agency, South Lakeland District Council and Sustrans.

The County Council has appointed Story Contracting Ltd to carry out the construction of the new bridge.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways, said

“We are delighted that we can commence work, and we have sent direct communications with local residents and businesses to ensure that they are updated on all the plans and any disruptions that might happen.  The replacement bridge will be an asset to the area and be more accessible for all.”

Cllr Peter Thornton, Deputy Leader of Cumbria County Council and Local Member for Kendal, said:

“I’m really pleased work is starting, Gooseholme Bridge forms a key part of the town’s pedestrian and cycleway route network, promoting walking and cycling in Kendal, so it’s vital to secure the long-term future of this bridge.”

Access will still be maintained for entry to Gooseholme, but will be limited due to the works area, clear signposting will be placed during construction.
