Young age groups see rise in COVID cases despite fall overall

Cases of COVID-19 have fallen overall in Cumbria according to the latest weekly data but cases in younger ages have risen sharply.

The number of COVID-19 cases recorded in Cumbria in the week ending Friday 12 November fell to 1,987 - a decrease of 96 or 5% compared to the previous 7 days.

However, new cases in the 19-24 and 5-11 age groups increased compared to the previous week (+24% and +16% respectively).

There was also a notable increase in South Lakeland where new cases increased by 33%.

Hospitalisation data in the week ending Tuesday 16 November shows the number of new patients admitted with a COVID-19 positive status in the county decreased by 19 from the previous week.

Sadly however, there were 9 more COVID-19 related deaths in Cumbria.

Colin Cox, Cumbria County Council’s Director of Public Health, said: “I’m really pleased to see cases fall again and hopefully this trend continues over the coming weeks.

“It’s concerning to see cases in younger age groups rising again, however.

“If you’re a parent, please ensure your children are testing regularly (recommended at least twice a week) and you’re familiar with the latest guidance issued by the council and the government to parents and schools.

“Additionally, if your child is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine and they haven’t had it yet, please speak to your child’s school to find out when it is likely to be offered through the school or visit the NHS website to see if there’s a vaccination centre for younger age groups near you.”

To find out more about COVID-19 vaccine, or to book an appointment visit the NHS website. Please note, not all walk-in vaccination centres can administer the vaccine to 12-17 year olds.
